Marina Bay: Best for First-Time Visitors

If you’ve dreamed about visiting Singapore, chances are you’ve pictured Marina Bay.

This is the Singapore of postcards and Instagram photos: Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, the skyline, rooftop bars, and the waterfront promenade.

For first-time visitors, it’s hard to beat.

One of the biggest advantages of staying here is convenience. Many of Singapore’s most iconic attractions are either within walking distance or just a short MRT ride away.

You can easily explore:

  • Gardens by the Bay
  • Marina Bay Sands
  • Merlion Park
  • The Singapore River
  • Boat Quay and Clarke Quay

The area also feels polished, modern and very easy to navigate, especially if it’s your first time in Singapore.

The downside? Hotels here are some of the most expensive in Singapore, and while the area is beautiful, it can feel a little less “local” than some of the heritage neighbourhoods.

Marina Bay is best if:

  • You want iconic skyline views
  • You’re short on time
  • You plan to do lots of sightseeing
  • You enjoy luxury hotels and rooftop bars

Marina Bay might not suit you if:

  • You’re travelling on a tighter budget
  • You want a more local or cultural atmosphere

Orchard Road: Best for Convenience & Shopping

Orchard Road Singapore.

If Marina Bay is Singapore’s glamorous showpiece, Orchard Road is its practical, easy-to-live-in centre.

This is Singapore’s main shopping district, packed with huge malls, restaurants, hotels and MRT stations. While it doesn’t have the same “wow factor” as Marina Bay, many travellers end up loving Orchard because it’s simply so convenient.

One of Orchard’s biggest advantages is transport access. You can get almost anywhere in Singapore quickly from here, making it a great base if you plan to explore multiple neighbourhoods.

It’s also particularly good for:

  • families
  • longer stays
  • travellers who like shopping
  • people wanting more hotel choice

You’ll find everything from affordable mid-range hotels to luxury five-star stays.

Another underrated benefit? Orchard is incredibly easy in Singapore’s heat and humidity. You can walk between malls, restaurants and MRT stations in air-conditioned comfort for much of the day.

The trade-off is that Orchard can feel a little less atmospheric than Marina Bay or Chinatown. It’s more functional than exciting. Most restaurants in this area are located within shopping malls or hotels.

Sentosa feels completely different from the rest of Singapore.

Instead of skyscrapers and shopping malls, you’ll find beaches, resort pools, palm trees and family attractions. For many travellers, especially families, staying here makes Singapore feel more like a tropical holiday destination than a city break.

One of the biggest reasons families choose Sentosa is convenience.

Many of Singapore’s biggest attractions are located here, including:

That means less commuting and easier days with younger children.

The hotels here are also designed much more around relaxation and facilities, with large pools, family rooms and resort-style layouts.

The downside is that you’re further from the city centre. While Singapore transport is excellent, it still takes extra time to get to places like Chinatown, Marina Bay and Orchard Road.

At the end of the day, Sentosa is a man-made island specifically focussed on entertainment and relaxation It can therefore also feel more tourist-focused and less culturally “Singapore”.
