Katong & Joo Chiat is one of Singapore’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, famous for its pastel-coloured shophouses, incredible food scene and rich Peranakan heritage.

You’ll find a fascinating mix of old-school bakeries, trendy cafes, boutique stores and traditional eateries sitting side by side along East Coast Road and Joo Chiat Road.

The area has long been associated with Singapore’s Peranakan community. These are the descendants of early Chinese immigrants who settled in the Malay archipelago and blended Chinese and Malay traditions into a unique culture.

Today, Katong & Joo Chiat remains one of the best places in Singapore to experience Peranakan culture through its architecture, food, museums and small independent businesses.

But beyond the heritage and history, this is simply a really fun neighbourhood to explore, whether you’re hunting down the best laksa in town, cafe hopping or taking photos of those famous rainbow-coloured shophouses.

Just wandering around the streets and soaking up the atmosphere is one of the best things to do in Katong & Joo Chiat.

The neighbourhood feels very local, with beautiful heritage buildings, hidden cafes and plenty of interesting little discoveries around every corner.

• Admire the colourful Peranakan shophouses – the famous pastel-coloured terrace houses along Koon Seng Road are one of the most photographed spots in Singapore.
• Visit The Intan – this private Peranakan home museum offers a fascinating insight into Peranakan culture, traditions and antiques. Tours must be booked in advance.
• Try Katong Laksa – Katong is famous for its laksa, a rich coconut curry noodle soup that is one of Singapore’s most iconic dishes.
• Visit Geylang Serai Market – one of Singapore’s best wet markets. Downstairs, you’ll find a bustling market selling fresh produce and traditional ingredients, while upstairs is a fantastic hawker centre.
• Explore the street art – keep an eye out for colourful murals and artwork hidden throughout the neighbourhood.
• Visit Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple – this beautiful Hindu temple is one of Singapore’s oldest temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha.
• Walk to East Coast Park – if you feel like stretching your legs, it’s only a short walk to East Coast Park.

Katong & Joo Chiat is a great neighbourhood for browsing independent boutiques, lifestyle stores and heritage shops. You’ll find everything from handmade ceramics and local fashion labels to Peranakan-inspired gifts and homewares.

Insider Tip: Many of the smaller boutiques open later in the morning, so it’s best not to arrive too early if shopping is your priority.

• Kim Choo Kueh Chang – famous traditional store known for rice dumplings, kueh and other Peranakan snacks.
• i12 Katong – modern shopping mall with supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and family-friendly facilities.

You definitely won’t go hungry in Katong & Joo Chiat. This neighbourhood is one of Singapore’s best food destinations, with everything from old-school hawker favourites to modern cafes and trendy restaurants.

• 328 Katong Laksa – probably the most famous laksa spot in the neighbourhood and a must-try for first-time visitors.
• Mr & Mrs Moghan’s Super Crispy Roti Prata – has a bit of a cult following in Singapore for dishing up delicious crispy flaky breads. Note that it closes up shop at around 1 pm, so head here early. 
• Sin Hoi Sai Eating House – long-running local favourite known for seafood dishes and classic zi char cuisine. It’s especially popular for crab dishes, cereal prawns and their famous Marmite Pork Ribs.
• Guan Hoe Soon Restaurant – one of Singapore’s oldest Peranakan restaurants, serving traditional Nonya dishes since the 1950s, making it a great place to experience classic Peranakan cuisine in a nostalgic setting.
• Baba Chews – relaxed restaurant located within Hotel Indigo, serving modern Asian, Peranakan signatures and Western classic dishes.
• Hjh Maimunah – this Michelin Bib Gourmand-winning restaurant is one of Singapore’s most famous nasi padang restaurants, serving buffet-style authentic Malay and Indonesian cuisine.
• Birds of Paradise – artisanal gelato shop famous for botanical-inspired flavours such as white chrysanthemum, macadamia butterfly pea and lychee raspberry.
• Chin Mee Chin Confectionery – iconic old-school coffee shop serving kaya toast, kopi and traditional pastries in a beautifully restored heritage building.

Katong & Joo Chiat is a fantastic area to stay in Singapore if you want somewhere with a more local feel than Marina Bay or Orchard Road.
